Ceremonial Transfer of MANA de Kansas City Historical collection

Dear Community Leaders,

I would like to extend a special invitation for you to attend the ceremonial transfer of MANA de Kansas City's historical collection to the Special Collections Department at UMKC's Library. MANA de Kansas City voted to deed its rich history for safe keeping and future research. This will benefit not only the community at large but future researchers that will be able to articulate MANA de Kansas City's work to add to the scholarly body of knowledge about Latina's in the Kansas City Metropolitan area. This dedication is timely because UMKC is working to establish a Latina(o)/Chicana(o) Studies Program.

A MANA de Kansas City board member, Dr. Christina Vasquez Case, Director of Alianzas a program of the University of Missouri Extension and UMKC Institute for Human Development, is co-chairing the Latina(o)/Chicana(o) Studies Committee. The Committee's primary goal is to establish an Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Minor and eventually a Major. They will also explore a Graduate Level Interdisciplinary Certificate Program.

In 2011 MANA de Kansas City will celebrate its 30th anniversary; what a great opportunity to preserve our rich history about the pioneering Mexican-American women of Kansas City. Our Latina(o) Community, the general public and researchers will have access to MANA de Kansas City documents to learn, share and educate future generations about MANA de Kansas City's story. On behalf of MANA de Kansas City we invite you to join us on Thursday, November 18th at 6:00pm in Room 303 of the UMKC Miller Nichols Library located at 800 E. 51st St. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to give me a call at 913.219.7324 or email me back.

Annual Holiday Dinner - Posada del Sol

MANA will host its annual holiday dinner for the residents of Posada del Sol on Friday, December 3, and we need your help. A sign up sheet will be circulated at the November 11 Membership meeting for you to sign up to bring a food. For anyone who has participated in past years, you know how much the residents enjoy and appreciate this event. We enjoy it too.

In addition to the meal, we will provide gift bags for each residents. We are in the process of identifying the number of male and female residents at Posada but in past years we've had a total of approximately 65. Gift items and toiletries will be needed for each of the bags. More information on the needs for the event will be provided at the meeting.

The Missouri Women's Council was established in 1983 to identify and address issues affecting the economic and employment status of Women in Missouri. It works closely with other agencies and community based organizations to build awareness, educate, promote opportunities for and enhance the lives and well being of Missouri's women and families. It serves as a resource and referral center designed to connect women to a network of accessible, high quality advisory services and information.

Recognizing Latina Contributions to the Kansas City Community: Moda Latina

The focus on Latinos in the news lately has been almost totally on immigration issues, ignoring the large populations of Hispanic Americans who have been productive members of American communities for years and generations. Kansas City’s Latinas have been working through MANA de Kansas City for over 25 years to create community leaders, engage in community service, and educate and involve the community on public policy issues important to Latinas and their families. An all-volunteer national organization that places a premium on community service, leadership, and education, MANA also provides an educational enrichment program for young girls, the Hermanitas Program, and offers a college scholarship yearly to a Latina student who demonstrates both scholarship and community service.
Moda Latina, MANA’s major fundraiser for the scholarship and leadership programs, is a showcase for Latinas with exceptional community service records, each of whom models the latest fashions at a dinner and fashion show. The sixth annual Moda Latina Dinner and Fashion Show will take place at Harrah’s at One Riverboat Drive, NKCMO, at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, June 8, 2007, following a reception from 5:00-6:00 p.m.. Cost is $55.
. Moda Latina models are nominated by the community and selected based on their records of community service. Two students from the Hermanitas program and the college scholarship recipient also model the fashions provided by Coldwater Creek and Group One. This year, Moda Latina will feature not only community volunteers modeling contemporary fashions but a show of colorful regional dresses from Mexico, presented by Maria Chaurand.
Modeling this year, Maria Elena Jackson, a single mother of two with an M.S.W. from UMKC, has worked for the LULAC Education Service Center for over 10 years, most recently serving as Interim Executive Director. One school at a time, she built the Young Readers Program to serve seven schools, and she initiated the PIQUE Program to help Latino parents learn how to get involved in their children’s schools.
Yvonne Vasquez-Rangel served as Executive Director of the LULAC National Education Service Center for over 10 years. Yvonne initiated LNESC, where up to 7 counselors in high schools were employed to assist Latino students and the Hispanic Leadership Opportunity Program. Currently, she does development work for Cristo Rey High School and administers the Hispanic Scholarship Fund. A cancer survivor and mother of a four-year-old, Yvonne continues refusing to let anything get in the way of making sure that Latino youth get the information and opportunities they need to lead a successful life.
Mercedes Mora, born in Michoacan, Mexico, grew up on Kansas City’s Westside. After high school, she returned to Michoacan, receiving a B.A. in accounting.. Over 17 years ago, she began serving the Hispanic community in Kansas City through her work as clinical supervisor of the Dia Por Dia Program at Guadalupe Center, the first bilingual ADA State Certified Program in Missouri. She counsels Hispanics addicted to alcohol and other drugs and works to educate the community on addiction issues, also serving as a board member of the Jackson County Mental Health Levy and is a State Certified Court Interpreter.
Melissa Cera recently graduated from Rockhurst University with degrees in Nonprofit Leadership Studies and Spanish. She was president of the Student Organization of Latinos for 3 years, also holding leadership positions in Sigma Delta Pi, the Spanish Honor Society. While still in school, she worked in the Hispanic Ministry office for the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas and is currently the Admissions Associate for Cristo Rey High School. Her ambition is to obtain an M. P.A. and found a faith-based not-for-profit to serve Hispanic youth in the Kansas City area.
Judith Donnelly owns Vista Connections, Inc., which matches businesses with employees. She and her husband also co-own Soft-Vue, recognized by the Kansas City Chamber of Commerce as one of the city’s top small businesses. As a board member of APOYO, an organization for Hispanic families, she coordinates their fundraising efforts and raised money to remodel the APOYO kitchen. Through involvement with her church, she also obtained additional funding for APOYO programs.
Arelis Denise Flores was born in Aguascalientes, Mexico. She grew up in Chicago and came to Kansas City in 2001, attending J. C. Harmon High School, where she was class president her senior year. Currently a Business Administration sophomore at UMKC, Arelis is Treasurer of UMKC’s Association of Latin American Students. The first in her family to go to college,. she is also Media Relations Director of Latinos of Tomorrow, producing a Saturday morning show to promote youth education, civic involvement and careers.
Each year, one model is selected to represent the MANA membership. The 2007 MANA model is Janell Avila, a founding member of KU’s first Latina sorority, Sigma Lambda Gamma, who was active in numerous campus organizations, such as the Hispanic-American Leadership Organization. After graduation from KU, Janell attended DePaul College of Law where she continued her involvement in student and community groups, such as the Hispanic Law Students Association, and was awarded a Public Interest Law Institute grant to work at the Legal Assistance Foundation as an intern assisting low-income clients in Chicago. After graduation, Janell returned to Kansas City to work in immigration law as a partner with the firm of Garcia, Solorio & Avila, LLP.
The recipient of the 2007 MANA Scholarship, Natalia Kay Roldan is currently in the six-year medical program at UMKC where she is working on her undergraduate and M.D. at the same time. To accomplish this, her course work is at least twenty credit-hours every semester. With the little free time she has, she tutors a friend in calculus and also visits an elderly woman at John Knox Village. She is the second of three children.
The two Hermanita models are Fanny Herrera, a 7th grader at Foreign Language Academy in Kansas City, Missouri, and Nina Wussow, a 7th grader at Lakeview School in Kansas City, Missouri, who also volunteers at Mattie Rhodes events.

MANA de KC is offering Board Governance Training. This will be a leadership development training and an implementation of curriculum for leadership, as well as an overview of the roles and responsibilities of a non profit Board of Directors.
Topics Include:

* Defining the Structure of the Board of Directors

PLATICA TOPIC: DIVERSITY IN THE WORKPLACE
MANA de Kansas City is inviting you to their first quarterly Platica scheduled for 2007. The topic of discussion is "Diversity in the Workplace" and the speaker for the event is Mr. Charles "Chuck" Romero.
Supporting and managing diversity in the workplace is an important part of creating a positive environment. The key outcome for workforce diversity training programs is promoting an atmosphere of inclusion and respect within your organization.
Mr. Romero is the Director of Diversity at the University of Kansas Medical Center. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for C.A.S.A. of Johnson & Wyandotte counties; Center for Practical Bioethics; Texas Alumni Association, and Unity Church where he is Chaplain Emeritus. He was born in El Paso, TX as a third generation American-Mexican. He attended Texas Tech University where he received his degrees in Sociology and Psychology. He later attended Baker University in Kansas and obtained his M.B.A.
Attending this event will help you gain information on how supporting and encouragin diversity positively affects the workplace. We also welcome you to share your own personal experiences on how diversity is approached in your workplace.

This is one event they look forward to each year. Dinner, gift bags,

5th Annual Hispanic Day at the Capitol - MAY 3

You are cordially invited to be a delegate at the 5th Annual Hispanic Day at the Capitol. May 3, 2006 will represent another historic day for the Hispanic residents of the State of Missouri. This will be our fifth official visit to the State Capitol in Jefferson City, Missouri. Representatives from around the State will spend a day gathering information to take back to their communities. This information will make us aware of opportunities that we might not know exist. It will educate us on the process of government and the best way to approach agencies for the assistance which can be rendered to the Hispanic Community.

This will allow us to meet, to discuss with, to educate, and to influence the makers of the laws, and the administrators of the laws, and more importantly to let THEM KNOW THAT THE HISPANIC COMMUNITY IS HERE TO BE HEARD.

In 2002 we had 40 delegates. In 2003 we had 75 delegates, in 2004 we had over 100 delegates, and last year we had right at 100 delegates. We expect to have more this year.
There will be a reception the evening of May 2, 2006.

On May 3, 2006 we will visit the Senate and the House. We will also be given presentations by some state agencies. You will be able to attend the state agency presentations. We will meet the Governor and statewide elected officers and leadership in the Senate and the House.

You will be provided with a formal agenda after you officially register for the event.

Your registration fee is $10.00 (cash). You will be provided with a continental breakfast and lunch on Wednesday and the reception will be provided also.

We have a block of rooms available at $72.00 plus tax (single or double) on May 2rd at the Capitol Plaza Hotel located at 415 W. McCarty Street, Jefferson City, MO 65101 (2 blocks south & 1 block west of the State Capitol). You may call the hotel directly at (573) 635-1234 to make your reservations; please tell them you are with the Hispanic Day Group when you make your reservation for the reduced rate. Last year’s Hotel ran out of the reserved rooms. So, please call them immediately.

If you are from the western half of Missouri and want to attend please contact: Elida Cardenas in Kansas City. (See below). Lake of the Ozarks, Lebanon, and Mountain Grove are in the western half. Jefferson City, Kirksville and Columbia are considered to be in the eastern half . Hiway 63, running North and South is the unofficial divider for the state. In the eastern half contact Anthony B. Ramirez. (See below.)

Ground Rules:
1. We are Hispanics, and are part of the Hispanic Community in the State of Missouri.
2. We are not espousing any particular political party (not Democrat, Green Party, Republican, or another party). This is not a time to divide ourselves into political parties or separate groups.
3. We are not advancing any particular religious faith or agenda.
4. We are not advancing any one nationality, as we are Hispanics for this one day.
5. We are committed Hispanics interested in advancing the interests of the Hispanic Community in the State of Missouri.
6. We are presenting ourselves as a group, not as individuals.
7. We are legal residents and are taxpayers from Missouri.
8. If you commit yourself to attend, please attend.
9. When we come together as a group, delegates are not to interject their own personal prejudices or agenda, as we are espousing the interests of the Hispanic Community.
10. Delegates are not representing a business nor a labor union, but are part of an organization that works for the betterment of the Hispanic Community.
